Thermal Bridging Solutions

Thermal bridging is recognized is a significant building envelope heat loss. This program provides an overview of thermal bridging, why it occurs as well as its prevention. Also, we will compare building details with and without a thermal break to highlight the importance of determining accurate values of thermal transmittance. This presentation will quantify the three types of heat loss.

 

  • Plane elements such as floors and walls

  • Linear elements such as between window and wall elements

  • For localized elements such as structural members penetrating walls

 

Learning objectives:

  • Describe why thermal bridging occurs and the effects on building envelope performance

  • Review several applications including concrete balconies, column footings, steel the steel connections, steel to concrete connections.

  • Describe how to calculate effective wall assembly U values

  • Review thermal modeling options with trade-offs to be made to comply with new Building Codes  

 

Mechanical Architectural Louvers

Louvers and sunshades are incresingly becoming part of architectural wall texture. Also reviewed will be louver types, air performance, rain defense, and tie-ins required for glazing and cladding systems. Designers now realize that louvers and their function in cladding systems an essential element in building façade design by architects.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how architectural aluminum louvers improve the aesthetics of cladding systems combined with improved efficiencies with new louver blade designs. 

  • Learn why aluminum louver specifications should be in division 8 for cladding and glazing contractors trades. 

  • Coordinate with mechanical engineers for efficient design to meet new building code requirements. 

  • The typical application for all these products is institutional, commercial, and residential high-rise multi-family projects. This learning session would be of interest to architect designers and specifiers specifically interested in divisions 7&8
